Hive Thermostat Installation in London
Updated
The Hive Thermostat is the Hive model with the dial. It runs on four AA batteries and comes with a mains receiver that takes the place of your old programmer near the boiler. A vetted JACK pro fits the receiver on your existing controls wiring, tests the boiler and pairs everything, for a fixed price before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London installs the Hive Thermostat: the receiver from the box goes where your old programmer or receiver was, on the existing wiring, the boiler is tested, and the thermostat is fixed to the wall or put on a stand and paired. You need a Hive Hub for the app. Wiring at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How the Thermostat is powered and mounted
The thermostat itself needs no wiring: four AA batteries power it, and it talks to the receiver wirelessly. Hive's guide asks for an inside wall about 1.5 m from the floor, a spot clear of radiators and direct sun, and no more than about 10 metres from the receiver and hub. It fixes to a single-gang back box or straight to the wall, or stands on Hive's table stand.
The receiver is the wired part. Hive's guide says any existing single-zone timer or wireless receiver is removed completely and the Hive receiver wired in its place, from a switched fused spur fitted with a 3 A fuse. Hive picks the receiver for you at checkout by asking whether you have a separate hot water tank.
Retailers sell this generation as 'V4', with or without a hub in the pack and often with OpenTherm in the name. The installation is the same; the packs differ in whether a hub is included and which receiver is in the box.
What the pro checks first
- The boiler's make and model against Hive's list of incompatible boilers
- That the receiver in the box matches the system: single channel for a combi, dual channel for a cylinder
- Where the old controls connect: at the wall or wiring centre, or only inside the boiler
- A switched fused spur is in place for the receiver
What the pro does on the Thermostat
- Controls circuit isolated and proved dead
- Old programmer or receiver removed and the Hive receiver wired in its place
- Old wired thermostat, if any, taken out of the circuit at the wall or wiring centre
- Boiler tested from the receiver: fires on demand, stops when switched off
- Thermostat fixed or stood, batteries in, paired to the receiver and hub
- Heating schedule, boost and holiday mode shown in the Hive app
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the boiler and its label (make and model)
- A photo of your current programmer and room thermostat
- Whether your Hive pack included a hub, and which receiver is in the box
- Whether you have a hot water cylinder
How Hive installation is priced
A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the Hive kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.
Full pricing guide for Hive installationFrequently asked questions
Does the Hive Thermostat come with a hub?
Hive's own box list for the Hive Thermostat is the thermostat, receiver, batteries and guide, with the Hive Hub sold separately. Some shops sell packs with a hub included. Without one, the thermostat still controls the heating in stand-alone mode, but there is no app.
Can the Hive Thermostat control my hot water?
On a boiler with a separate hot water cylinder, yes, through the dual channel receiver: on, off, schedules and boost. On a combi boiler there is no stored hot water to schedule, so Hive hides the hot water features.
How much does Hive Thermostat installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Thermostat, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
