Hive Radiator Valve Installation in London

Updated

The Hive Radiator Valve is a battery-powered smart head that replaces the top of a thermostatic radiator valve, so a room can have its own temperature and schedule. Hive puts three adaptors in the box. A vetted JACK pro fits one on each radiator you choose and pairs them to your Hive Hub, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A JACK pro in London fits Hive Radiator Valves on radiators that already have thermostatic valves: the old head unscrews, the matching adaptor (M30, M28 or Danfoss RA) goes on and the Hive valve is paired to your Hive Hub. No water is drained. Radiators with plain on/off valves need new valve bodies first, booked separately as plumbing.

How the Radiator Valve is powered and mounted

Many London radiators fitted in the last few decades have a thermostatic valve with a numbered head. That head unscrews from the valve body without opening the water system, and the Hive valve screws on in its place using one of the three adaptors Hive puts in the box. Hive puts the job at around 10 to 20 minutes a radiator.

Older radiators with plain on/off valves, or a valve that weeps or will not move, are a different job: the valve body itself has to be changed, which means draining down and refilling the system. Hive says that needs a heating professional, so it is booked as plumbing before the smart heads go on.

What the pro checks first

  • That each valve is thermostatic, not a plain on/off valve
  • The valve make, to pick the right adaptor
  • That no valve is leaking or seized
  • Which room has the Hive thermostat

What the pro does on the Radiator Valve

  • Each valve checked: thermostatic, not leaking, pin moving freely
  • Old head off without disturbing the valve body
  • Adaptor matched to the valve and the Hive valve fitted
  • Batteries in, valve paired to the hub and named by room
  • Room schedules set in the app

Before you book: what to send

  • A close-up photo of one radiator valve from each room, with the old head on
  • How many radiators you want covered
  • Which Hive Hub you have, if any

How Hive installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the Hive kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a Hive Radiator Valve in the room with my thermostat?

Hive's installation guide says the thermostat should not be in the same room as a radiator controlled by an ordinary thermostatic valve, because the two together can leave the heating on. Ask the pro how best to set up that room with Hive's own valves, or whether to move the thermostat.

Will a Hive Radiator Valve fit my Danfoss valve?

Danfoss RA valves take the Danfoss RA adaptor in the box. Other Danfoss types, and some other makes, need a different adaptor; a close-up photo of the valve lets the pro check before the visit.

How much does Hive Radiator Valve installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Radiator Valve, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
