Ring Floodlight Cam 4K Pro Installation in London

Updated

Formerly Floodlight Cam Pro (2nd Gen); Ring renamed it Floodlight Cam 4K Pro on 21 August 2026, and the UK store lists it as Floodlight Camera 4K Pro. It is not the older Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. It is a mains floodlight with a 4K camera, hardwired at 100–240 V in place of an existing outside light. A vetted JACK pro in London checks the earth and the switching, fits it on the same circuit and leaves the certificate, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the Ring Floodlight Cam 4K Pro in place of an existing outside light on the same circuit, which is not notifiable under Part P, and leaves a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. It is hardwired at 100–240 V and needs a working earth and a permanent live, never a dimmer or timer. An old lighting circuit with no earth needs remedial work first, and a brand-new circuit needs a registered electrician, which JACK does not book as part of the job.

Power, Wi-Fi and wiring facts come from Ring's UK help centre and UK store, linked beside each fact. Most Ring models changed name in the summer of 2026, so an older box may show a previous name: check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 31 October 2026.

How the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro is powered and mounted

The Floodlight Cam 4K Pro is a light fitting first, so this is an electrical job: the old outside light comes off and the floodlight cam goes onto the same supply, with live, neutral and earth into its terminal block. In England that is a replacement on an existing circuit, which is not notifiable building work under Part P. The paperwork that records it was done and tested safely is a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, which the pro leaves with you; if you rent, pass a copy to your landlord.

Two things catch people out on London houses. Many outside lights are switched from indoors, or run through a PIR sensor or a timer, and Ring says not to connect this fitting to a dimmer or timer, so it needs a permanent live: the PIR or timer comes out of the circuit, and a wall switch has to stay on. And older lighting circuits, especially those wired before the mid-1960s, can have no earth at all. Ring's guide for this model says to ground the fitting properly, and its guide for the older Wired Plus and Pro says not to install at all without a working earth, so a circuit like that needs remedial work before the floodlight goes up.

Ring's page for this model says 'installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area', and its installation guide points anyone unsure about the wiring to an electrician. In England, Part P controls which jobs must be notified rather than who may do the work, and swapping a light on an existing circuit is not notifiable.

What the pro checks first

  • That the existing outside light has an earth conductor at the fitting, proved with a test rather than assumed
  • How the light is switched now: wall switch, PIR, photocell or timer
  • The circuit's protection at the consumer unit, including whether it is RCD-protected
  • What the fitting will fix to, brick, render or a timber soffit, and whether there is a sound weatherproof box behind the old light
  • Height and access, because a first-floor or eave position may need a tower rather than a ladder
  • If it replaces a Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, which joined 5 GHz only on channels 100 and above, the router's band and channel before set-up

What the pro does on the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro

  • Circuit isolated at the consumer unit and proved dead before the old light is touched
  • Old fitting removed, the cable's condition inspected and the earth confirmed by test
  • PIR or timer taken out of the circuit, or the wall switch arranged so the floodlight always has power
  • Floodlight cam wired live, neutral and earth, with the clamp plate on the cable's outer sheath, and sealed to the wall with silicone as Ring describes
  • Circuit tested after the change and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate completed for you
  • Camera set up in the Ring app, brightness chosen between 200 and 2,000 lumens, and motion zones drawn
  • On a high eave or ceiling position, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature

How the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro installation goes

  1. 1Your photos of the old light, the switch and the consumer unit reviewed before the visit
  2. 2Circuit isolated, proved dead and the old light taken down
  3. 3Earth, cable condition and switching checked; without a working earth the job stops and the remedial options are explained
  4. 4Mounting bracket fixed over the supply on the wall or ceiling
  5. 5Live, neutral and earth connected in the terminal block, and the fitting closed and sealed
  6. 6Power restored, the circuit tested and the certificate written up
  7. 7Floodlight cam added to the Ring app, lights and motion set, and the lights checked after dark if the visit allows

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the outside light you are replacing, close up and from the ground
  • A photo of whatever controls it: wall switch, PIR sensor or timer
  • A photo of your consumer unit with its circuit labels visible
  • Roughly how high the light is, and what is below it: a path, a flat roof or a basement well
  • Whether you rent or are a leaseholder, and have permission to change an outside fitting

What is on your wall now decides the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro job

The pro reads this from your photos before you book, so the price covers the right work.

Replacing a light fitting on an existing circuit is not notifiable in England (Approved Document P, 2013 edition, paragraph 2.7). A weatherproof electrical box, if there is none behind the old light, is agreed and added at cost before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro replace a PIR security light?

Yes, as long as the PIR comes out of the circuit. Ring says not to connect the fitting to a dimmer switch or timer, and a PIR switching the supply on and off would cut the camera's power too, so the pro wires it to a permanent live and the camera's own motion detection takes over.

How high should a Ring Floodlight Cam 4K Pro go?

Usually where the old light was, because the supply is already there. Ring's positioning guide puts outdoor cameras at 2.5–3 m, angled down. If your old light sits much higher, the camera can be tilted further down, and Ring also lists ceiling mounting, so a porch ceiling or soffit works too.

Is the Floodlight Cam 4K Plus fitted the same way?

Very nearly. Ring's page for the newer Floodlight Cam 4K Plus also lists hardwired 100–240 V AC (50 Hz, 32 W), says it mounts on a round weatherproof electrical box, and rules out battery and solar power. The same earth, switching and circuit checks apply.

How much does Ring Floodlight Cam 4K Pro installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Floodlight Cam 4K Pro, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
