Ring Floodlight Cam 2K Installation in London
Updated
Formerly Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen); Ring renamed it Floodlight Cam 2K on 24 August 2026. It is not the older Floodlight Cam Wired Plus. It is a mains floodlight with a 2K camera, it joins Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz only, and it comes with a junction box mount. A vetted JACK pro in London takes down the outside light you have, wires the 2K to that light's cable and pairs it in the Ring app, at a price agreed before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London swaps an existing outside light for the Ring Floodlight Cam 2K on the same circuit, using the junction box mount from the box, and leaves a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for the work. It is hardwired, needs an earth and a supply no dimmer or timer can interrupt, and connects on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.

Power, Wi-Fi and wiring facts come from Ring's UK help centre and UK store, linked beside each fact. Most Ring models changed name in the summer of 2026, so an older box may show a previous name: check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 31 October 2026.
How the Floodlight Cam 2K is powered and mounted
The Floodlight Cam 2K comes with a junction box mount, and Ring's guide says the fitting must go on a round weatherproof electrical box. That matters on London houses, where the old outside light can be a bulkhead or a halogen floodlight screwed straight over a cable with no box behind it. The pro checks what is behind the old light from your photos, and if a box is needed it is agreed and added at cost before you book.
Electrically, the job is a swap: the old light comes off and the Floodlight Cam 2K goes onto the same cable, on the same circuit. What decides whether it can go ahead is the earth and the switching. The 2K's own guide asks for a properly grounded fitting on a supply with no dimmer or timer in it; Ring's older Wired Plus and Pro guide is blunter, saying do not install if a working earth is not available.
Wi-Fi is the other limit. The 2K only joins 2.4 GHz networks, and an outside light on the back of a solid-walled house can be the weakest signal spot in the home, so the signal is read at the light before anything is taken down.
What the pro checks first
- An earth at the existing light, proved with a tester rather than judged from the cable colours
- Whether a PIR, photocell, timer or wall switch controls the light now
- The 2.4 GHz signal at the light, read in the Ring app with the old fitting still up
- The condition of the cable where it leaves the wall, since brittle old sheathing changes the job
- Whether a weatherproof electrical box sits behind the old light, and what the mount will fix to: sound brick, render that may be hollow, or a timber soffit
What the pro does on the Floodlight Cam 2K
- Power off at the consumer unit and the circuit proved dead before the old fitting comes down
- Junction box mount fixed over a sound weatherproof electrical box at the cable entry, and the fitting sealed around its edge with silicone as Ring's guide describes
- Floodlight cam wired to the existing cable with the earth connected, then closed up
- Any PIR or timer removed from the supply so the floodlight cam is never switched off by it
- Circuit tested and the Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate filled in
- Camera joined to your 2.4 GHz network, with the lights and motion zones set in the Ring app
How the Floodlight Cam 2K installation goes
- 1Photos of the light, switch and consumer unit checked so the visit is planned and priced
- 2Signal tested at the light on 2.4 GHz
- 3Circuit isolated and the old light removed
- 4Earth and cable inspected; with no earth, the fitting stays off the wall until remedial work is done
- 5Junction box mount fixed, then the floodlight cam wired and mounted
- 6Supply back on, the circuit tested and the certificate completed
- 7Ring app set-up: lights, motion zones, privacy zones and a test alert
Before you book: what to send
- Close and wide photos of the outside light it will replace
- A photo of the switch, sensor or timer that controls that light
- A photo of the consumer unit and its circuit labels
- How high the light is, and what a ladder would stand on below it
- If you bought Ring's plug-in adapter accessory, say so: the job is then about a socket and a cable route, not a hardwired connection
Do you need an electrician for the Ring Floodlight Cam 2K?
It depends on what is there now. In England:
- Swapping an existing outside light for the floodlight cam on the same circuit is not notifiable under Part P; an IET Part P Q&A says a light fitting outside is not notifiable provided it is connected to an existing circuit
- Taking out a PIR or timer to give a permanent live is an alteration to that same circuit, and stays non-notifiable
- A lighting circuit with no earth needs remedial work before any floodlight cam goes on it
- Running a new circuit from the consumer unit is notifiable, needs a registered electrician, and is not something JACK books as part of this job
Ring's guide for this model recommends professional installation, and tells anyone not comfortable with the wiring to bring in an electrician. Part P does not limit who may do electrical work; it controls which jobs must be notified. A JACK pro does the swap safely and leaves the certificate that shows it.

Will the Floodlight Cam 2K work on my 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No. Ring lists only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for the Floodlight Cam 2K, so it needs a 2.4 GHz network that reaches the outside wall where the light is. If the reading at the light is poor, a mesh point nearer that wall is usually planned before the fitting goes up.
Can I plug in a Floodlight Cam 2K instead of wiring it?
Yes. Ring lists plug-in power through an adapter accessory for the Floodlight Cam 2K, sold separately. That route leaves your lighting circuit alone but needs a socket the cable can reach and a way through the wall or a frame, so send a photo of the adapter with your request.
Is the Floodlight Cam 2K the same as the Floodlight Cam Wired Plus?
No. The Wired Plus is an older 1080p floodlight cam, and Ring's wiring guide for it says not to install at all without a working earth. The Floodlight Cam 2K, sold as Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen) until August 2026, records in 2K and ships with a junction box mount.
How much does Ring Floodlight Cam 2K installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Floodlight Cam 2K, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
