West Elm Delivery Day: A Checklist Before Assembly
Most assembly problems start before the pro arrives: a headboard that will not turn on the stairs, a box opened and a bag of fittings lost, a dent nobody photographed. This checklist covers the West Elm delivery day, from measuring the route in to booking the build.
In short
Before a West Elm delivery: measure the route in against the boxed size on the product page, check whether your delivery type includes assembly, and leave the boxes sealed until the build. On build day a JACK pro counts the parts, builds and levels the furniture, fixes tall pieces to the wall and flattens the packaging for recycling.

Before the delivery
Do these while you are still waiting for the delivery date:
- Measure the route in: front door, hallway, stair turns, landings, lift doors and the room door, against the boxed size on the product page
- Check which delivery type your order has (each West Elm product page shows it under Stock Status): Standard Delivery by parcel courier, Home Delivery to your door, or Home Delivery & Assembly into the room of your choice
- Clear the room and a space beside it for laying out panels
- Book the build for a slot after the delivery date, so the pro is not waiting for a van
When the boxes arrive
A few minutes at the door saves a lot later:
- Count the boxes against the delivery note before the driver leaves
- Photograph any crushed corners or tears on the boxes
- Keep everything sealed until the pro arrives, especially the small bags of fittings
- Store boxes flat and dry, not leaning against a radiator
On build day
What happens when the pro arrives:
- Parts are counted before building, and anything missing or damaged is photographed in the JACK app so you can contact West Elm
- Tall pieces are fixed to the wall with plugs that suit your wall
- Drawers and doors are adjusted, and the piece is levelled
- Packaging is flattened and stacked for recycling at your home
How West Elm assembly is priced
A vetted pro prices your piece from the product link and a photo of the room, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.
The design moves the price far more than the size. A side table with screw-in legs is a short job. A solid-wood bed with a slatted base, a six-drawer dresser with runners to align, or a sectional sofa whose pieces clip together is a much longer one. Send the product link or a screenshot of the order so the price is for the piece you bought.
Several pieces from one delivery, such as a bed, two nightstands and a dresser, go on one booking for one price. Pieces from other shops can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.
Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, furniture assembly is typically £35–£75 per hour. For a big delivery, a full-day handyman booking often suits: a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Should I open the boxes before the pro arrives?
It is better not to. Opening boxes early is the easiest way to lose a bag of fittings. Count the boxes and photograph any damage to the outside, then leave them sealed for the pro.
What if a West Elm part is missing?
The pro counts parts before starting and reports anything missing or damaged with photos in the JACK app, so you have what you need to contact West Elm. Whatever can safely be built is built in the meantime.
